What is Cholacol?
Cholacol is a highly potent digestive supplement that is used to effectively stop indigestion. Apart from expelling unwanted fats from an individual’s body, it also helps in absorbing nutrients that were not getting absorbed due to slow metabolism or a lack of gallbladder. Cholacol is especially produced for those individuals whose gallbladder has been removed through surgery. It can only take care of indigestion and cannot cure or treat any other stomach-related problems. This digestive supplement controls the activities of stomach cells and assists in absorbing only the dietary fats, thereby helping to maintain a healthy metabolism.
This drug is manufactured and supplied by Standard Process Inc. It is a company based in Wisconsin, USA and specializes in creating food supplement products.
Cholacol is available in two variants; Cholacol I and Cholacol II.
Each Cholacol I tablet includes the following components:
- Collinsonia root powder – 235 mg
- Purified bovine bile salts – 120 mg
- Calcium stearate
Each of the Cholacol II tablets includes bentonite as well as the above mentioned ingredients but combines them in different proportions. A single Cholacol II tablet includes the following:
- Bentonite – 420 mg
- Collinsonia root powder – 15 mg
- Purified bovine bile salts – 7 mg
- Calcium stearate
No artificial flavors are added to these tablets.
The recommended dosage for Cholacol tablets is 2 tablets/meal, or as prescribed by the physician. While consuming Cholacol II tablets, 4 tablets should be taken 15 minutes prior to each meal or an individual may also follow the prescribed instructions.
How does Cholacol work?
Bile is manufactured by the liver which is then sent through hepatic duct to gallbladder, which stores and concentrates it. Gallbladder reserves bile for times when an individual consumes greater quantities of fat and hence require additional bile for proper digestion. As the fats travel through one’s gastrointestinal tract, gallbladder secretes the bile into common bile duct which then gets deposited to the first part of small intestine where the initial phase of fat digestion is performed. The bile breaks down the molecules of fat into smaller particles. This facilitates further digestion of the fat particles as they travel down the small intestine and get fully absorbed. Owing to low surface tension, bile salts present in bile allow fat emulsification. The liver keeps on producing bile in absence of a fully operational gallbladder. However, the body is not able to make use of its “bile reserve.” Lowered flow of bile also increases the level of cholesterol in blood. Cholacol combines the beneficial qualities of collinsonia root with concentrated and purified bile salts to enhance metabolism of dietary fat and encourage absorption of nutrients in the intestines.
Consumption of Cholacol tablets can have the following health benefits:
- It supports healthy metabolism and absorption of dietary fats.
- Cholacol minimizes the intensity of gastric discomfort.
- It stimulates normal functioning of the gallbladder.
- Intestinal symptoms like bloating, gas, constipation and abdominal discomfort are reduced by Cholacol.
- Cholacol II works great with food poisoning and diarrhea.
- Cholacol can also cure conditions such as psoriasis and septicemia.
Who Should Avoid Cholacol
People having gallstones should avoid taking Cholacol. Pregnant women or patients having serious medical conditions should consult a doctor before taking Cholacol.
Cholacol Side Effects
Cholacol uses bovine bile salts obtained from cows. This can cause major health problems in humans. Firstly, the salts obtained from a cow’s gallbladder are different. This is because the structure of the digestive system of this animal is not same as humans; their dietary requirements are also quite different. Secondly, the gallbladder does not discharge bile salts into intestines for supporting digestion of fats as long as there is a definite need. When the gallbladder actually releases its bile salts, it does so in amounts which are specifically required for a given task. If too much amounts of salts are released, it will increase the number of gallstones greatly and cause major problems. Hence it is advisable not to use this product if one is at the risk of having gallstones.
An accidental overdose of iron-including product like Cholacol can cause fatal poisoning in young children under the age of 6. Hence this product should be kept away from children. To deal with an accidental overdose, a doctor or a poison control center should be consulted immediately.
Cholacol Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as one remembers it. However, the dose should not be doubled in any case to make up for the missed dose. A regular dose should not be skipped for a missed one.
Cholacol has certain advantages over other similar supplementary products.
